The Georgian Society for East Yorkshire’s AGM began at 1:30pm with the annual video which this year included, in addition to the year’s visits, a number of other events with which the society had involvement. These included the launch of “Cabbages & Kings”, a history of Beverley’s Saturday Market by Barbara English, Ann Bennett & Susan Neave, the Beverley Georgian Festival and the unveiling of the restored coffin plates at Londesborough Church. For the first time the entire video has been made available on line.

After the chairman’s speech it was announced that three committee members would be standing down this year. Olwyn Hirst has been our Honorary Treasurer and Joan Dewson our Membership Scretary have been responsible for arranging our programmes of visits and will stay in post until the end of this year’s season. Digby Harris has been a committee member for 31 years and has had responsibility for commenting on Listed Building Applications in the Hull area. All three have made great contributions and will be missed.

The meeting concluded with a very entertaining lecture by Professor Barbara English MBE. Her subject, derived from her researches for “Cabbages & Kings”, was the Saturday Market of Beverley, and in particular the market cross.
