Brigg & Scawby Hall

The visit to Brigg and Scawby was another success. In Brigg the Society visited the Buttercross before being taken on a guided tour of the town centre. Scawby Hall, which has only become open to the public in recent years, proved to be of great interest. The house dates from the seventeenth century but shows evidence of renovations in the Regency period. The collection of paintings is particularly fine and includes examples of the work of Abraham Wright of Derby and George Stubbs.

Scawby Hall was the home of the Nelthorpes; their crest, a dagger motif, can be found in various places, including on the rain water heads. The house was started in 1603; there have been many additions and extensions, including the crenellation and re-fenestration of the late 18th century.
