It is with sadness that we record the death on 29 July 2017 of our President. John Lightowler, who was appointed President of the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire in 1999, was a member of the society’s executive committee from the late 1950s. As a trustee of Blaydes House John oversaw the building’s sale to the University of Hull, thus ensuring its long-term future.

John Lightowler was the fourth generation in the well-known family business of painters and decorators. Founded in Hull in the 1860s the firm have worked on many historic buildings in East Yorkshire and further afield, including Beverley Minster and Trinity House, Hull. In addition to the Georgian Society, John was involved in many other organisations in Hull including the Literary and Philosophical Society of which he was president in 1984-5. He was a magistrate and for many years a governor of his old school, Hymers College.
