Barton –upon-Humber is best known for its Anglo-Saxon church tower; Richard Clarke’s tour revealed that the town has a rich legacy of historic buildings from all subsequent periods.
The tour began with the sadly dilapidated Eagle House, a listed Regency villa which has been damaged by fire. From there we moved on to see the mediaeval timber frames behind the Georgian facades of Fleetgate and the early Georgian “Old Cocoa House” rising above Victorian shop fronts.
We were shown a number of interesting Georgian town houses and the substantial Baysgarth House, now the town’s museum. The tour terminated beside the blow well between St Mary’s and St Peter’s churches, which is currently being cleaned up and restored.
