Barbara English giving lecture.

Professor Barbara English delivering a lecture on Mary Wollstonecraft at the 2019 AGM in Hull History Centre.

Saturday, 16th February 2019

The AGM, held at Hull History Centre proved a great success. After the annual “Year in Review” video, the AGM proper, with re-election of members went smoothly.

Barbara English gave a talk on the life of Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-97)whose childhood home was in Beverley. Recent research using old rate books by Barbara English and Susan Neave has pinned down the address to No. 2 Highgate, not within Wednesday Market as previous biographers had thought. Mary Wollstonecraft was the author of the influential “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died at the age of 38 from complications associated with the birth of her second daughter, Mary Shelly the author of “Frankenstein”.

Barbara has edited the newly published “Extraordinary Women of Beverley”, published by the Beverley and District Civic Society. This book contains biographies of twelve women associated with Beverley, from the dark ages until the twenty-first century. This costs £7.50 and can be obtained from the Beverley and District Civic Society.
