What We Do

The Georgian Society for East Yorkshire is for all those interested in the history and culture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The society promotes scholarship of subjects relating to the Georgian period and campaigns for the preservation of Georgian Architecture in Hull & East Yorkshire. Society members may participate in lectures and visits to historical sites.

The Society’s Objectives

  1. To stimulate public interest in, and appreciation of, Georgian architecture and town planning, and the history and culture of the Georgian period.
  2. To stimulate local interest and pride in the history of Kingston upon Hull and the historic East Riding especially relating to the Georgian period.
  3. To contribute to discussions on how Georgian buildings and their settings can be preserved or appropriately adapted bearing in mind heritage considerations.

Activities in support of the objectives

  1. Organising events (including lectures, guided tours, visits, and informal gatherings).
  2. Publishing resources (including an annual journal, books and online resources).
  3. Supporting the activities of other organisations were these further the Society’s objectives.
  4. Facilitating the archiving of materials relevant to the Society’s geographical and historical areas of interest.
  5. Monitoring and commenting on planning applications having an impact on buildings (and their context) relevant to the Society’s remit.
  6. Carrying out other activities judged by the executive committee to support the Society’s objectives.
