The Society organises a programme of events across the year for members and non-members. It also highlights other events that it participates in or wishes to promote to a wider audience.

Saturday 12 April  Visit to 2 Beverley Houses: 7 Hengate and 29 Highgate

Meet at 7 Hengate (HU17 8BL) at 1pm

Tours of 7 Hengate (early 18th century) and 29 Highgate (1830s) by the owners, with historical notes provided by Susan Neave. After the tour of 7 Hengate there is an approximate 15 minutes walk to 29 Highgate for the next tour and tea.

 

Saturday 31 May  Georgian Day  Beverley Guildhall (Register Sq. HU17 9XX)  10.30am to 3.30pm

A fun day of Georgian-inspired activity and exciting living history, especially enjoyable for families, although all are welcome. Get out your fancy dress and join us in Georgian costume if you would like to. Experience a day packed with living history characters street performers, Regency dancers, children’s craft, Georgian-style face painting and more.

Teaming up with the East Riding Museums for a second year, the lively day promises to be very enjoyable. Perfect for people who love history and enjoy the past being brought to life in order to explore the Georgian period in Beverley’s history. 

 

Thursday 19 June          Hessle Cliff Guided Tour with Dr Alex Ombler

10.30am to 12.30pm                            

Tickets £5 per person (members); £8 per person (non-members)

This guided walk will explore the little-known but fascinating, natural, industrial and social history of Hessle Cliff. Today this area is better known as the Humber Bridge Country Park (Little Switzerland) and Hessle Foreshore. Following a route through what was once an extensive chalk quarry, the tour will lead up to the historic Hessle whiting mill. There will be an opportunity to see inside the mill tower, which was built c.1815 and designed to crush chalk from the quarry. Along the way, you will be able to hear stories about the lives of the people, both rich and poor, who once called Hessle Cliff home.

Participants will begin at the Well Being Hub and the tour will include the opportunity to watch a 16 minute film at Hessle Mill, where actor Gordon Meredith brings the Mill’s history to life.

Meet at the Well Being Hub, Humber Bridge Car Park. Tour finish at Hessle Mill.

Toilets are situated near at the Humber Bridge Car Park, or near Hessle Mill.

Participants should be aware there is a set of broad steps to walk down from the Humber Bridge Car Park. There are benches to pause on along the route. For more information about access please contact [email protected]

There is good tree cover to protect from the worst of any rain, but bring along a raincoat if wet weather is likely.

Feel free to bring along a picnic and flask to enjoy after the event at the picnic bench area after, or visit the Country Park Inn, close by the Mill. There will be no refreshments provided at this event.

 

Saturday 12 July. Walk Around Bishop Burton with Leslie Hebb. 1.20pm to 3.30/4pm

Meet at Bishop Burton Village Hall (Cold Harbour View HU17 8QJ)  

Enjoy a walk around Bishop Burton village, led by Leslie Hebb, followed by afternoon tea and cakes at the village hall from about 3.30pm. The walk begins and ends at the village hall, where parking is available.

£8 (members), £10 (non-members), including tea and cake.

 

Friday 26 September. Visit to Everingham Hall and Chapel. 2.00pm

Meet at Oak Barn, Everingham Park (Everingham, YO42 4JA)

Tour with the owners Philip and Helen Guest of the splendid RC Chapel of St Mary and St Everlida and the fine Georgian country house designed by the architect John Carr. Afterwards, participants will return to the Oak Barn for tea, coffee and cake.

 

Thursday 9 October  An Evening of Georgian Music

Charterhouse Chapel (Charterhouse Lane, Hull HU2 8AF). Performance begins at 7pm (tbc)

Enjoy the stunning chapel at the Charterhouse as the setting for a programme of period music. Playing flute, harpsichord and violoncello, the renowned Concert Royal will perform music by Handel and his English and Scottish contemporaries, including a chamber music version of ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’.

The performance will last approximately one hour, followed by refreshments in Castleton Hall (small donation to Charterhouse). Doors open 6.45pm (tbc)

£10 (members), £17 (non-members). Offer: £7 refund if you join up as a GSEY member on the night!
