The Georgian Society for East Yorkshire in conjunction with the Berlin-based Friends of Kant and Königsberg organised a successful conference commemorating the tercentenary of the birth of Immanuel Kant, the greatest German philosopher, and his close friendship with Hull merchants (see article in The Georgians section of this website). The day conference held on 15 June 2024, at Hull History Centre, with financial help from Hull University Maritime History Trust, attracted 60 people, members of the society and others from the region and further afield, including Germany. Amongst the last were three of the speakers, Gerfried Horst, chair of the Friends of Kant, Marianne Motherby, a direct descendant of a Hull merchant, and Tim Kunze, Curator, Immanuel Kant Department, East Prussian State Museum, Lüneburg. The other speakers were the author Max Egremont (Lord Leconfield and Egremont), Judith Spicksley, Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, and Nick Evans, School of Humanities, University of Hull, and David Neave of the Georgian Society. There was also an exhibition and a trail leaflet related to Kant’s Hull friends.
