Friday 17th March 2023
This was the Society’s first proper visit of 2023. It was a guided tour of Sewerby Hall led by the curator Janice Smith and Education Officer Robert Chester. The Hall, which was rebuilt on the foundations of a Jacobean building in 1714, then extended in the nineteenth century, has been restored as near as possible to its Edwardian appearance. Textiles to match those seen in Edwardian photographs were sourced, and in some instances new carpets were woven. Furniture matching sale inventory descriptions has been borrowed from the V&A collection.
After the tour, members explored the grounds of the Hall where new displays of spring bedding have recently been planted.
