Francis Frederick Johnson was an early member of the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire. He was born on 18 April 1911 in Bridlington where, after graduating from Leeds School of Architecture, he based his architectural practice. Francis's interest in architectural preservation led to him being invited to join the executive committee of the the newly founded society in 1938. From 1939 he contributed a number of articles on local buildings to the society's transactions. During his career Francis was a pioneer of conservation techniques and worked on various well known historic houses including Hardwick Hall, Belton House and Fairfax House. He also designed a number of new houses and churches in the Georgian style. Francis was awarded a CBE in 1991, he died in 1995.
Fairfax House, York
Extensively adapted in the twentieth century as a cinema and dance hall, Fairfax House was saved from decay and returned to its former glory by York Civic Trust in 1982-84.
