Ian Small yesterday gave the Georgian Society a fascinating lecture to the Georgian Society on Tate Wilkinson and the Yorkshire Theatres. Mr Small's interest is the late eighteenth century when there were few playwrights of any note in Britain. The lecture proved that the period was still a busy one for the theatre. Wilkinson was responsible for the theatres in Hull and York receiving "Theatre Royal" status, meaning they could officially charge for theatrical productions; other venues could only put on plays as a free interval entertainment during a musical concert.
